Student Learning Outcome #5
I have worked to develop the fifth Student Learning Outcome throughout my time within the Masters of Library and Information Studies program, from my first semester with the chance to attend the 2018 North Carolina Library Association conference.
I hope to gain employment within an academic library, so gaining membership to the American Library Association and the subsection of the Association for College and Research Libraries were some of the first steps I took once able to widen my network. Becoming involved in subsections such as the Literatures in English section of ALA and the Instruction Section of ACRL have helped me to isolate areas of interest for my future career.
The following confirmation of attendance, poster, and images of attendance and participation demonstrates how I've worked to engage in professional development and service as well as how I've found specialized areas that have related to my individual interests. These will assist me in my future career as experiences to build upon as I attend future conferences and adjust my plan for attending conferences the more I become involved in professional research and service.
- SLO #5: The student engages in professional development and service and identifies specializations and related professional organizations as relevant to individual interests.

Professional Development in Action |
A specific area of interest, along with non-traditional collection materials and disability research, has developed for me in the area of diversity in libraries. I'm interested in being an ally to those in librarianship from underrepresented groups, as well as providing ways a majority white, female profession can dismantle racist and oppressive practices that have been a part of the history of librarianship. Two ways I've worked to develop further competencies in this interest, along with attending conferences and conference sessions focused specifically on diversity in libraries, has been to implement a diversity initiative for my library and information studies student association. As the LISSA vice president, I have implemented a diversity initiative focused on moving away from diversity as a buzzword and providing actionable steps to implement diversity practices in the library field. This includes the implementation of a critical librarianship book club that analyzes critical theories in relation to librarianship.
