The first semester of graduate school was a whirlwind of activity, as if someone sat on my life’s remote and the fast-forward button got stuck. My mind is still somewhere in late August, and when I have time, I’ll go back and get it. I survived without any psychological scarring, so it’s a mark in the win column for me!

LIS Assignments
Here’s a look at a few of the assignments from this semester that helped me to grow as an LIS professional and understand more about the trends and policies that libraries see every day.
- My libguide on Civil War Era Authors
- Annotation: Stella by Starlight
- Annotation: Inside Out and Back Again
- Children’s Book Illustrator: Sophie Blackall presentation
Professional Development
|
This semester was full of opportunities to expand as a professional, and the LIS world is great at making new professionals feel prepared for stepping into their own roles as librarians in the future. I was able to attend the North Carolina Library Association‘s 62nd Biennial Conference, and attended sessions like “Student Track: Publishing, Presenting, and Other Professional Development Venues,” “Embedding Outside the Classroom: Three Academic Librarians in the Departments and Residence Halls,” and “LAMS – Personality in the Workplace: Making the Most of Individual Differences” as well as contributing to the Student Relations Committee Business Meeting.

Putting Faces to the Names I've Read
I was also able to meet the one and only Nancy Pearl, as she spoke about her newest book, a fiction novel, George and Lizzie. Nancy was extremely welcoming and seemed like the perfect person to drink coffee with, or maybe ask for reading suggestions? Just a thought!

When I went home to Tennessee for the Thanksgiving holiday, I wanted to give my grandmother a special present. We always read Karen Kingsbury's books together when I was younger, and I wanted to get a book signed by her for my grandmother's birthday. While my grandmother wasn't able to attend, Karen sent love her way and I was able to meet the author of many books that impacted my life.
